The program

Canadian citizenship by descent

Discover the criteria to qualify for this program.

Selection Criteria

A Canadian parent, grandparent, or further back

  • You may qualify if one of your parents was a Canadian citizen at the time of your birth (born in Canada or naturalized).  This includes parents born abroad to a Canadian parent, in some cases (the “first generation limit”).
  • You may qualify if you can trace an unbroken family line back to a Canadian citizen: a parent, grandparent, or in some cases an earlier ancestor.

Review your process!

  • Many older refusals were based on rules that no longer exist — it’s worth revisiting a past “no.”
  • As of June 2026, some already-approved citizenship certificates are being reopened for review where records are incomplete or weren’t sourced directly from the issuing authority. If this affects you, get advice before responding.

Canadian citizenship by descent

Residency in Canada

  • A. Verify your eligibility
  • B. Signing of the agreement and Mapping your family lineage. We help you build the chain — you → parent → grandparent → Canadian ancestor — and identify where the connection may be strongest, and where records will be hardest to find.
  • C. Document and archive research.  Archival and genealogical research may be required. We work with provincial civil registries, national archives, and, where useful, professional genealogists to reconstruct the family chain.
  • D. Filing the proof of citizenship application. Our legal team prepares and submits your file to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

  • E. Review by the authorities. IRCC examines the file and may request additional documents or clarification.
  • F. Decision. If approved, you receive your proof of citizenship certificate. If refused or additional proof is needed, our legal team responds on your behalf.
  • G. Canadian passport. Once citizenship is confirmed, you receive your proof of citizenship certificate. We assist with your first Canadian passport application.
  • H. Family extensions. Where applicable, we review whether your spouse or children may also qualify under the same program, or provide strategies so you can be united in Canada.
